Free Trade and Labour

ttip1

Understanding the actual impact of the trade liberalisation on labour is a key issue for pursuing sustainable development through trade policies. Free Trade can promote growth and jobs by stimulating production and increasing its efficiency, though gains and losses may be unequally distributed across countries, sectors and occupations. As to working conditions, the net impact of trade liberalisation really depends on the interactions between the different regulations and levels of enforcement of workers’ rights at stake. The section explores this topic, leading from the the trade agreement presently being negotiated between the European Union and the United States, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) recently entered by the European Union and Canada.

Opportunities for a major upgrade of one’s biggest economic relationship do not come along often, and we cannot afford to squander this one. I applaud the efforts of the teams for exploring creative ways to open markets to support job creation, growth and competitiveness, including by bridging divergences in our regulatory regimes, without compromising the level of health, safety and other regulations our people have come to expect’.
